Those following me on Facebook have seen me recently ranting about photography theft.  Someone posted my images to pinterest, and then were using those in the HTML of a scam fashion website.  2 days after I successfully requested that Pinterest remove the image, the scammers uploaded it again to trick people into buying the dress in the photo.

One of my stolen images is still being used by a rap artist (black and white header photo).  This guy replaced the image he stole from me with a copy of my DMCA takedown. This French guy refused to take my photos down and blocked me on facebook.  Even local bloggers think it’s perfectly ok to take someone’s photograph and post it as their own.  And a company that sells photoshop filters used my photo as an example, even though they didn’t actually edit my photo using their filters!

This is why I rarely share client photography work on social media!

I use Pixsy.com to track down the images.  But it takes hours to hunt down web servers, figure out who owns the website, find contact information, and send takedown notices, plenty – of – examples – still exist, usually in other countries that ignore takedown notices.  And sometimes the web servers and website owners are just impossible to find.

So you rarely see me post my client photography work anywhere other than where the client specifically approved (their website, private folders, etc).

Why Securing Your Photographs Matters

As photographers, whether we’re capturing weddings or snapping product shots for e-commerce, our images are our most valuable assets. But with great photographs comes the great responsibility of protecting them. Secure photo sharing isn’t just a technical necessity; it’s a vital part of building trust with clients and ensuring that our creative work remains our own.

Tailored Solutions for Every Photographer

Understanding the different tools and methods for protecting your images is crucial. Not every photographer will need all tools at once, so it’s essential to choose what fits your current needs while keeping an eye on future growth. Let’s dive into some effective strategies:

  1. Watermarking: This is your first line of defense. A properly placed watermark is more than just your logo; it’s a barrier against unauthorized use. Choose a photo sharing service that offers robust watermarking capabilities that cannot be easily cropped or edited out.
  2. Right-Click Prevention: Make it difficult for users to simply right-click and download your work. Enabling right-click prevention on your galleries can save you from many headaches, especially from those looking to upscale images for their use.
  3. Low-Resolution Samples and Encrypted Links: Displaying only low-res images for public viewing protects your high-res files. Additionally, using encrypted links for client galleries adds an extra layer of security, ensuring that only those with the correct link can access your work.
  4. Password-Protected Galleries: This is particularly important if you’re involved in sensitive shoots like boudoir photography or private events. Securing your galleries with passwords not only protects your images but also assures clients about their privacy.

Setting Yourself Apart

In competitive fields like photography, taking extra security steps can be a significant differentiator. Explain to potential clients how your secure sharing practices safeguard their images—this transparency can help close deals, particularly with cautious clients.

Ease of Access: Balancing Security with Usability

While security is paramount, the accessibility of your photos is also crucial. Ensure that your sharing system allows you to:

  • Retrieve and Display Quickly: Use platforms that offer intuitive apps and online portals so you can access and showcase your photos effortlessly, even when you’re away from your main equipment.
  • Manage Access Effortlessly: Complex security shouldn’t mean difficult access. Choose systems that provide straightforward recovery options and reliable customer support, ensuring you can get to your work anytime, anywhere—whether you’re on a local shoot or a remote landscape adventure.

Conclusion

Secure photo sharing does more than protect your business; it builds client confidence and supports your professional integrity. By choosing the right tools and practices, you can prevent unauthorized use of your images and grow your photography business on a foundation of trust and professionalism.
